Using ScrapeOps Residential Proxy Aggregator is really easy.

  1. Once you've got an API key, just use simple proxy port integration.
  2. In the example below, we setup an http and an https proxy as a dict.
  3. Then, we pass that dict into our proxies argument when making our requests.
  4. We also need to pass verify=False in order to ignore any SSL errors that might occur from our port integration.

  • proxies is a dict containing our proxies.
  • When we make our request, we pass in the following arguments along with the url:
    • proxies=proxies tells Requests to use the proxy connection we set up.
    • verify=False tells Requests to ignore any SSL errors why might receive because of our proxy connection.

Understanding Residential Proxies

Many websites block datacenter IPs by default. Sometimes it's just best practice to use a Residential IP address.

Residential proxies function by assigning a user a real IP address from an actual residential device (such as a home router or mobile device) provided by an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

This allows the user to appear as though they are browsing from a residential location, which makes it harder for websites to detect or block them as proxies.

With our standard proxy aggregator, your usage is measured by successful requests.

  • When we use residential proxies our usage is measured in size instead.
  • When using proxies, there's also the question of rotating vs static proxies.

Let's look at this stuff a little more in detail.

Types of Residential Proxies

There are two main types of residential proxies: Rotating and Static.

Rotating Residential Proxies

Rotating residential proxies are a type of residential proxy where the IP address changes or rotates at set intervals or with every new connection request.

This dynamic rotation helps mimic the behavior of different users accessing the internet from various real residential locations, making it difficult for websites to detect patterns or block access.

Pros:

  • Enhanced Anonymity: Since each request is routed through a different residential IP, it's much harder for websites to detect patterns and block access.

  • Avoidance of IP Bans: Frequent rotation of IP addresses reduces the likelihood of being flagged or blocked by websites with strict anti-bot measures, enabling continuous access.

Cons:

Static Residential Proxies

Datacenter

Datacenter proxies originate from **data centers, not ISPs. They use IP addresses provided by hosting services or cloud providers, which can be easily generated in large quantities.

Pros

  • Price: Datacenter proxies are cheap. Generally, they are much cheaper than residential and you only pay for successful requests.
  • Speed: They also tend to be quite a bit faster than residential.
  • Availability: Datacenter proxies usually operate with a much larger pool of IP addresses.

Cons

  • Blocking: Many sites block datacenter IPs by default. This makes some sites more difficult to scrape when using a datacenter proxy.
  • Less Geotargeting Support: While we often do get the option to choose our location with datacenter proxies, they still don't appear quite as normal as a residential proxy.
  • Less Anonymity: Since you're not traced to an individual residential IP address, your proxy location can be traced easily to a datacenter. This doesn't reveal your identity, but it does reveal that the request is not coming from a standard residential location. Your request isn't tied to some random household, it's tied to a company.

Residential

Residential proxies use real IP addresses assigned by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to homeowners, making the user appear as if they are browsing from a legitimate residential location.

Pros

  • Anonymity: Residential proxies offer a higher degree of anonymity. You're just one of billions of residential IP addresses across the globe.

  • Better Access: As mentioned several times previously, there are a number of sites that block datacenter IPs. Websites don't block residential IPs by default. Residential IPs represent their average users.

Cons

  • Price: Not only are residential proxies generally more expensive plan-wise, you don't pay per successful request. You pay for bandwidth.

  • Speed: Residential proxies can often be slower than their datacenter counterparts. You're not always tied to a state of the art machine with the best connection. You are tied to a real residential device using a residential internet connection.

Authentication

For authentication, we use our ScrapeOps API key. When you signed up, you received an API key.

This is used to tie all of your requests to your specific account. Think back to our basic request from earlier.

Our API key gets included in our URL so the Residential Proxy Aggregator can ensure that our account has the proper permissions to use the proxy.

Country Geotargeting

Country geotargeting is the ability to route internet traffic through specific geographic locations.

This capability allows users to access content or conduct activities as if they were located in a particular country, which is especially useful for marketing, data scraping, and online research.

With the Residential Proxy Aggregator, we can choose which country we want to appear in.

We handle this by adding a country param to our request.

City Geotargeting

City geotargeting allows users to route their internet traffic through specific cities.

At the time of this writing, we don't currently support city level geotargeting. This feature may come in the future.

You might want to use city level geotargeting for a few reasons.

Error Codes

Our list of error codes with the Residential Proxy Aggregator is pretty small. You show know that anything other than a status of 200 is going to require your attention.

This table can help you troubleshoot these issues.

When you run into an issue, lookup the status code and solve your problem accordingly.

Case Study - Scrape Amazon.es

Now, let's scrape Amazon.es. The following script will actually perform two scrapes.

  1. First, it will fetch Amazon.es from a US based proxy.
  2. Afterward, it will fetch the same site from a Spanish proxy.

Each time we fetch the site, we're going to scrape our location, and we're going to scrape the price of the first item that shows up in our results.
